Pope says 'tyrants' speech was not aimed at Trump

Image
Pope Leo has said he was not seeking to debate Donald Trump when he criticised "tyrants" for spending billions on wars in a speech earlier this week. The pontiff said the remarks, which he delivered days after a high-profile spat with Trump, had been written a fortnight earlier – "well before the president ever commented on myself". "And yet as it happens, it was looked at as if I was trying to debate, again, the president, which is not in my interest at all," he told reporters aboard a flight to Angola on Saturday. On Monday, Trump launched a scathing attack on the first American Pope – who has been a vocal critic of the US-Israeli military operation in Iran – as "terrible for foreign policy". The Pope, who is currently on a tour of Africa, said on Saturday that a "certain narrative that has not been accurate" had developed, citing "the political situation created" by Trump's comments. During a speech in Cameroon on Thurs...

Museveni Leads Mps In Shooting Exercise, Calls For Integrity In Leadership

Image
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni took Members of Parliament through a shooting practice session at the National Leadership Institute (NALI) in Kyankwanzi, using the occasion to emphasise national defence, discipline, and the fight against corruption on the closing day. During the event  the President, guided legislators on basic firearms handling, also observed their participation and congratulated them, noting that some were veterans. The President explained that Uganda’s security is anchored on the concept of a people’s army, where citizens are trained and can return to civilian life but remain available as a reserve force when needed. Museveni noted that such a system enables even countries with smaller populations to build strong defence capacity through continuous training and mobilisation of reservists. “This is how you maximise defence. People train, go back to their normal lives, but remain ready. That is what they do in countries like Israel, where citizens are called back...

Speaking during NBS Eagle last Sunday, the Senior Manager for Information, Communications and Public Relations at the NRM, Rogers Mulindwa, said the National Leadership Institute remains open to all political leaders and serves as a platform for shared learning and national engagement. He said invitations were extended to opposition parties and leaders who had previously participated in the program, though most did not respond. “The National Leadership Institute is for all leaders. We sent letters inviting opposition parties and their leaders who had previously attended to come and study together, but most did not respond, except Hon. Norbert Mao,” he said. Mulindwa added that the NRM expected greater participation from oppos...

Katikkiro Mayiga: The Steward Who Recast Buganda’s Modern Story

Image
When Charles Peter Mayiga was appointed Katikkiro of Buganda on May 12, 2013, he stepped into one of the most historically weighty offices in Uganda’s cultural institutions. Born in January 1964, the son of the semi-urban centre of Kasanje in Wakiso District was 49 at the time young by the standards of Buganda’s leadership and he carried with him a reputation for intellectual sharpness, organizational discipline, and a deep understanding of the kingdom he was about to serve. He succeeded John Baptist Walusimbi, inheriting a kingdom that was shaken and trying to reinvent against the tides following the deadly Buganda Riots of 2009. The 2009 Kayunga crisis had exposed one of the most fragile periods in recent history for Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II and the broader Buganda Kingdom. At the time, the kingdom was already grappling with mounting political tensions with the central government over land rights, federalism demands (federo), and limits on cultural authority in gover...
