Malaba Town Council to spend 978 million in new year.

Malaba Town Council will spend over 978 million shillings in the new financial year 2026/2027 with the focus on Infrastructure and Services.

The council presided over by the council speaker Julius Odiye voted unanimously to adopt a budget of outlining planned spending for the year beginning July 2026.

According to the budget presented by the  Malaba Town Council Vice LC3 chairperson Rose Kayanga who doubles as the secretary finance, the budget is prioritizing road upgrades, sanitation, health services and tourism-related infrastructure as the town seeks to balance development with rising service demands.

She described the budget as “responsible and forward-looking,” saying it aims to boost economic activity while addressing longstanding infrastructure gaps.

Key allocations include road rehabilitation and drainage works, improvements to water and sanitation services, expansion of community health centres, and investment in tourism

“This plan will improve daily life for residents and make Malaba town council more attractive to visitors and investors,” she said.

She said in the budget, Council expects to raise 601 million shillings as local revenue and 375 million shillings as central transfers

Majority councillors welcomed the focus on infrastructure but raised concerns about funding sustainability and delays in delivering previous projects. They urged clearer timelines and stronger monitoring to ensure funds are used efficiently.

Council documents indicate the budget will be financed through a mix of local revenue (rates and service fees), central government transfers, and planned donor or loan-supported projects.

The town clerk Isaac Omela Aseu said measures to widen the revenue base and strengthen collection will accompany spending.

He said council is committed to quarterly progress reports and public updates to enhance transparency.

"With approval in place, departments will finalize annual work plans and procurement schedules" said the town clerk.

Councilors asked for continued public consultation during implementation.

Leaders said they expect ground work on priority projects to begin in the coming months.
