The clan head of Kamarinyang in
Magodesi Town Council Tororo district Nicholas Okitwi Emoit Muliro has
challenged local council leaders to formulate by-laws that will help regulate
consumption of alcohol.
While addressing mourners at the burial
of one Julius Omachar Okware in Kamarinyang cell in Ginnery ward Magodesi town
today; The clan leader decried the high rate in which alcoholic substances are
being consumed in the area saying that it is likely to be a time bomb if not
regulated.
Okitwi says continuous abuse of
alcoholic substances in the area has had a negative impact on livelihoods and
majority of households can no longer have enough food since consumers have
abandoned garden work and decided to spend most of their time in trading
centers drinking.
Okitwi says through the country’s
alcoholic drinks control policy, local council’s can be guided to come up with
suitable bylaws that can help them regulate its consumption at village level.
Meanwhile Charles Okware a catechist
in Lwanjusi Catholic Out station of Mollo
Catholic Parish in the Archdiocese of Tororo who was the chief mourner hailed
the clan leaders suggestion to have consumption of alcohol regulated adding
that even in church the numbers of their believers coming for prayers has
reduced especially among the men.
He said most men have abandoned Sunday prayers
on grounds that their spouses go to pray for them but also the few men who tur
n
up to pray just come to sleep while prayers are ongoing implying that they
sleep late or they come straight from the drinking places.
