80% of the Disease Burden in Tororo District is Preventable

Tororo District LCV Seat Candidate on FDC ticket Mr. Gonza Paul, has called on the people of Tororo to consider the fact Good health is a significant factor in the fight against poverty

In a health analysis that he shared in several social media plat forms, Gonza revealed that 80% of ill health in Tororo is caused by preventable diseases like malaria, cholera, diarrhea, typhoid, and HIV/AIDS, including lifestyle diseases such as Diabetes, Pressure and Heart Diseases.

“Our focus is on stopping these diseases before they start,” Gonza said.

He pledged that although in Malaria Control, significant strides has been made through intensive vector control measures like universal coverage of Long Lasting Insecticide-Treated Nets (LLINs) and Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS), which reduced the burden, recent challenges require renewed commitment is needed, which he pledged his administration would embark on, if given the mandate.

“My administration will give priority to this commitment to ensuring these programs are sustained and effective, focusing on community-level malaria control cultures,” Mr. Gonza said.

On issues regarding Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH), he agreed with several actors in the sector that addressing poor sanitation, limited access to clean water, and inadequate garbage disposal is critical for preventing waterborne diseases like cholera and diarrhea and promised to ensure his administration put appropriate investment in clean water sources, promoting handwashing facilities, enforcing sanitation by-laws, and educating communities on hygiene practices, which has already shown success in reducing diarrhea cases in some areas.

Regarding Disease Surveillance and Early Warning which he agrees is critical in reducing the disease burden, he said he would associate with agencies who emphasize strengthening surveillance systems and disaster committees in order to detect and respond swiftly to outbreaks, such as cholera or other human disease outbreaks so as to contain their spread effectively.

“I do call upon the people of Tororo District to give me the mandate as their Chairman LCV so that, together, we can embark on this approach, because when we tackle diseases, we improve on production rates in our district,” he said.
