No Money for ‘Enemies’: Museveni Orders Media Blackout for Daily Monitor & NBS
Despite his long-standing reputation as a forgiving leader even towards former adversaries, Gen Yoweri Museveni’s hostility toward Uganda’s independent media—particularly the Daily Monitor, Nation Media Group (NMG), and Next Media—remains bitter and unwavering.
In a recent high-level Cabinet meeting, Gen Museveni issued a dramatic directive to Finance Minister Matia Kasaija: urgently find Shs30 billion. This sum, he insisted, must go to Dr. Chris Baryomunsi’s Ministry of Information and National Guidance. Its purpose? To amplify publicity for Museveni’s campaign for a ninth term as President of Uganda.
Attendees at the Cabinet session were reportedly taken aback when the President launched into a fiery tirade, singling out the two media powerhouses for harsh criticism and explicit exclusion.
